CPA offers support to ICBs on findings from The Hewitt Review

The Hewitt Review highlighted that barriers that currently reduce social care providers’ ability to play an integral role in local system design and delivery must be removed.

In an open letter to Integrated Care Board Chairs, the Care Provider Alliance offers support to ICB and ICP Chairs and Senior colleagues. For example, ICBs may wish to gain a better understanding of the breadth and depth of social care and the essential strategic role our members should play within your ICS.

CPA joins call for PM to unblock NHS workforce plan

The Care Provider Alliance joins 40 health charities, professional bodies, unions and the NHS Confederation to urge the prime minister to publish a funded workforce plan for healthcare in England. The organisations have warned the prime minster that his promises to improve the NHS will not be met unless the workforce crisis is addressed.

The workforce plan was originally earmarked for publication in Spring 2022 but has still not been published. Media speculation suggests that there is a disagreement between the Treasury and Department for Health and Social Care on the scale of the staffing needed for the NHS and other sectors.

Fair Cost of Care exercise reveals tip of the iceberg: CPA letter to Minister for Care

CPA’s analysis of councils’ Fair Cost of Care Reportsreveals that in 2021/22, the government paid at least £2.88 billion less than the actual cost of delivering care to people in their own homes, and in care homes for over 65s. The government's commitment of £162m Fair Cost of Care funding per year for the next two years is nowhere near enough to bridge the chasm identified by their own exercise. But the real deficit in funding for social care is even higher. The Fair Cost of Care exercises were based on out-of-date and incomplete figures which do not reflect the full range of care services, or future needs and pressures.

Nursing Industrial Action and advice to social care - CPA letter to Chief Nurse for Adult Social Care

The CPA has written to the Chief Nurse for Adult Social Care asking for dialogue and reassurance from DHSC and NHSE of the clinical continuity plans for activities within social care services which are likely to be impacted by the planned industrial action in December 2022. This includes planned and emergency nursing interventions, delegated nursing tasks and paramedic and first response support.

Face mask coverings: Letter to Secretary of State

The CPA has written to the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care asking her to recognise that this is the right time to move from routine face mask and face covering use, thereby enabling the sector to take a person-centred risk-based approach. CPA’s view is that the harm of COVID-19 restrictions, particularly the face mask policy, is certainly shifting to a position where the harm is greater than the benefit.

Social Care Policy Group: Reflections on the Social Care Reform Agenda

National adult social care organisations have come together to call on the Government to deliver a long-term care workforce strategy and tackle the issue of care worker pay. These organisations, which represent people who draw on care and support, social care providers, care workers and commissioners, all argue that action on these key issues will help address the serious problem of recruitment and retention and in turn, deliver better support for people across our communities.

CPA response letter to Cathie Williams, ADASS

The CPA has written to ADASS in response to a letter addressing Social Care Workforce Arrangements and the two Workforce Recruitment and Retention Funds. ADASS sought to clarify the expectations of both grants and to encourage providers to respond quickly and to work collaboratively when written to by councils in regards to the grants. The CPA has responded in support of the need for collaboration and to stress the importance of the need to work together at this time of crisis for the social care sector.

Why Social Care Matters And Why The Budget/ CSR Is Such A Missed Opportunity

We care. We are Social Care. We offer support to millions of citizens to enable independent and fulfilling lives.

Social care matters. It matters to the millions of people who use it now every day; it matters to the 1.52 million strong workforce supporting people every day; it matters to over 10 million unpaid carers; and it matters to the 18,200 organisations providing it.

It matters to the NHS who are facing huge pressures because without social care, people have to remain in hospital, even though their acute healthcare needs have been met, preventing others from gaining access to vital healthcare.

BAME deaths and coronavirus CPA Position Statement

Joint call on ministers by sector leaders, including the Care Provider Alliance, to break their silence on the future of social care. The statement, issued after the budget in March 2021, says that the coronavirus crisis has laid bare the fragilities of the social care system in England after 25 years of failure by successive governments to put it on a sustainable footing. It calls on government to extend and increase funding to stabilise the care system, and publish its proposals for the future of adult social care before the summer.

BAME deaths and coronavirus CPA Position Statement

The findings from the formal review by Public Health England and NHS England into the higher level of COVID-19 related deaths among people from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds is a worrying concern. It is critical that we understand the reasons for the disparity in order to draw any meaningful conclusions from the data. The report did not take into account the existence of comorbidities in explaining the differences. A more detailed analysis to establish whether there are any identifiable factors that could help inform decisions on how to keep people from BAME backgrounds safe during this pandemic will help us to find a way forward.
