NMC registration at record high: but decreases in community and learning disability nurses
24 May 2023
The Nursing and Midwifery Council has today (24 May 2023) published their annual report of the number of nurses, midwives and nursing associates who have joined and left the NMC register in the UK during 2022/23.
There were a record 52,148 new joiners, almost half of whom are internationally educated. This brings the UK NMC register to 788,638.
Care Provider Alliance Chair - Nadra Ahmed - commented:
“As care providers, we welcome the increase in NMC registrations.
“The figures also show that as a country we continue to be heavily reliant on overseas trained staff through international recruitment. This does enhance the diversity of new nurses, midwives and nursing associates. Over the past year the proportion of all registered professionals who are from Black and minority ethnic backgrounds has risen to more than a quarter of the register.
“We also note the decrease in specialist community and public health nurses and learning disability nursing staff. We therefore call on the government for the resources and systems to maximise the availability of NMC registered staff to take on all adult social care roles.”
