Supermarkets and priority access for care staff
Social care staff should be seen as key workers and therefore have the same priority access to supermarkets as NHS frontline staff during the Covid-19 outbreak.
The CPA wrote to all supermarket Chief Executives in March 2020 requesting this support.
As of 7 May 2020, we have successfully influenced Aldi, Asda, the Coop, Iceland, Marks & Spencer, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Waitrose to change their position and ensure care workers have priority access.
We continue to put pressure on Lidl and Tesco to change their positions.
How access works in practice at individual stores may vary. Care providers who hear about staff being refused access to priority shopping should contact their CPA member organisation.
We are publicly thanking supermarkets who are supporting social care workers – and naming those who are not.
